Jericho Before and in 2023

Jericho is often called one of the oldest known towns in the world, with a history that stretches back over 10,000 years. Located in the West Bank, near the Jordan River, Jericho is famous both for its mention in the Bible and for its importance in archaeology. Ancient ruins at the site, such as stone walls and towers, suggest that Jericho was home to one of the world’s first true settlements—where people began living in one place rather than constantly moving as nomads.

Jericho's early inhabitants built mud-brick houses and developed farming techniques, which allowed them to grow food and support a growing population. Archaeologists have discovered layers of ruins built on top of each other, showing how the city was rebuilt many times over thousands of years. One of the most famous finds is a circular stone tower, possibly used for defense or religious purposes, dating back to around 8000 BC.

In the Bible, Jericho is known as the city whose walls “came tumbling down” after the Israelites marched around it, but the real city is even older than those biblical stories. Jericho stands today as a symbol of early human civilization, showing how people first came together to build communities, protect themselves, and begin shaping the world we live in today.
