Fiji will host the MSG Governing Body Meetings this week which is scheduled to convene at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva from Monday to Wednesday 10-12 February 2020.
The meetings has been organised by the Fijian Government in collaboration with the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG), as current Chair of the MSG. It has been strategically scheduled to coincide with Fiji’s hosting of the Forum Trade Minister’s meeting to begin on Thursday this week in Suva.
The meetings are expected to bring together Foreign Ministers and Senior Officials from MSG Member countries, including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, FLNKS, and Republic of Indonesia as Associate Member, and MSG Observers. The Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) will be held on Wednesday 12th February to be preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) from Monday 10th to Tuesday 11th February 2020.
Director General of the MSG, Ambassador Amena Yauvoli said the main purpose of the Governing Body Meetings are to deliberate and make decisions on the 2020 Work Programme and Budget of the Secretariat, as well as on substantive policy issues including political, economic, social and sustainable development for the benefits of MSG Members.
He further stressed the importance of convening these meetings to provide guidance to the Secretariat on its work programme and budget as mandated by MSG Leaders.
Director General Yauvoli also expressed his sincere appreciation to the Fijian Government for its support to host the meetings in Suva, as well as to the MSG Chair and MSG Members, for their unwavering commitment over the years.
Fijian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Inia Seruiratu says that Fiji is proud to host this important sub-regional meeting and acknowledges the PNG Government for having the confidence in Fiji to host the meetings in the interest of advancing the aspirations of the Melanesian bloc.
Minister Seruiratu anticipates a robust discussions amongst MSG Members and looks forward to progressively advancing the common vision of the Melanesian sub-region in the deliberations this week.
Minister Seruiratu further stated that while this week’s meetings provides the guidance for the MSG Secretariat’s work plan for the year, it also sets the platform for developing affirmative outcomes for the Leaders’ Summit that is expected to be held later in the year.
The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) and Foreign Ministers Meetings (FMM) was last held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in February 2018.
